About this Event

Dates: Tuesdays June 25, July 2 and July 9, 6:00-9:00 pm all days. Ticket: $100. Instructor: Janie Yates. Materials fee: $10 for yarn and handout. Skills Needed: No prior weaving experience is required. Class Limit: 6

An inkle loom is a simple, lightweight, portable loom that is designed for weaving narrow warp faced bands of up to about 4" wide. These bands are quick and fun to weave and can be used in a multitude of ways. Shoe laces, book marks, purse or bag straps, dog leashes, belts, and guitar straps are just a few things you can make with an inkle woven band.

In this class you will learn all the basics needed to get you started weaving on an inkle loom. You will learn how to read an inkle weaving pattern draft, how to make heddles, how to warp an inkle loom, how to start a weft and begin weaving, tips for good selvages and how to finish a weft as well as some other kernels of inkle weaving wisdom.

NOTE: Please refrain from wearing scented lotion or perfume as the instructor is extremely sensitive to fragrance.

Supplies to Bring:

About Janie…If I had to describe myself in one line it would be this: Jane of All Trades, Artist at Large. For a very long time I felt pressure to narrow my focus and pick one media to master but I just could not do it. I am not just a weaver or a painter or a clothing designer or a teacher. I am all of these and more.

By the time I entered college I was proficient in crochet, macrame, tatting, embroidery, beadwork and sewing. I began my college career with an emphasis in drawing and painting but switched half way though to textiles. It was at Berea College that I learned to weave and to dye fabric using shibori and batik. After college I added colored pencil painting, decorative painting, clothing design, basketry, beaded jewelry, spinning, kumihimo, bobbin lace, several forms of band weaving, shoe making to my list of trades.

I married soon after college and had my son and daughter and for the next 24 years was very fortunate to be a full time mom. While my children were growing up I continued to acquire new skills and perfect existing ones through study, research and workshops. During this time I also began teaching numerous and widely varied textile related classes to children and adults. It gives me great satisfaction to teach a student a new skill that brings them joy.

I still have a very deep need to learn about and do everything related to yarn and fabric. And I still love to draw and paint. And I love to teach. I have about 14 pans in the fire at all times ... and that’s just fine.

If you are not feeling well, please contact the instructor instead of coming to the class. On a case-by-case basis, we may be able to reschedule you into a future class or provide a make-up lesson. Ticket fees are not normally refunded.

Depending on the for Hamilton County at the time the class is held, a mask may be required. If so, you will be notified before the first class.

Unless specifically stated, Weavers Guild classes are designed for ages 18 and above. On a case-by-case basis, a minor may be permitted to register for a class but must be accompanied by a registered adult who agrees to assist the minor during the class. Contact the Education Committee Chair at [email protected] for permission before registering any minor in a class.

Fees are non-refundable. Your fee will only be refunded if the class is canceled or changed to a different date. Three registrations are required for a class to be held. Students will be notified before the start date if a class is canceled due to an insufficient number of students. Eventbrite processing and credit card payment fees will not be refunded if a student cancels for any reason.
