Intro to Visionary Art

"Visionary Art" is the practice of art making that focuses on imagination, intuition, dreams, visions, existential concerns, spiritual/mystical and other profound experiences. Visionary artists create for many reasons, including to express themselves, to help others see what they see, to engage in creative "flow" and creativity as healing, or to inspire.

(NOTE: for those who want to learn more, but can't commit to a full weekend, select "lecture only" to attend Saturday's presentation.)

In this 1.5 day workshop, you will receive an overview of visionary art throughout history and the contemporary global Visionary Arts movement, learn the principles, approaches and techniques used by contemporary artists to design and build their art pieces, and try your hand at creating a painting of your own.

Prior experience with painting is helpful, but not required. We will be using standard tube acrylic paints for this workshop; you may also apply what you've learned to painting in oils.

Info: Learn about the influence of spiritual and visionary approaches to art over time, especially as applied by artists in the Western cultural tradition, and the lineage of Visionary Arts as a contemporary, world-wide creative movement. We will study important figures in the Visionary Arts field, and the meaning and purpose infused in their work. There will be time for Q & A at the end of the lecture.

Info: Students will be introduced to a few techniques to help inspire a design for their practice paintings. We will spend the remainder of time working on roughing out designs in pencil, and applying them to canvas with ink. Design session can end as early as 7pm, but may go over until 8pm if needed.

Info: We will have a meditative check in and warm up session, followed by instruction in the Mischtechnik painting process, as adapted to acrylic painting. Students will develop their art pieces from lights and darks to adding one or more glazes. Instructions will be given on how to complete the painting process at home, as needed. Closing circle and brief discussion around 3:45-4pm.
