Late summer is peak flowering season in Maryland, with some of our most popular flowers from black-eyed susans to coneflowers to sunflowers. All of these flowers are in the same family, the sunflower or aster family, Maryland’s largest. This family has a unique flowering structure that requires special terminology to describe, and the large number of species makes identification difficult. In this beginner-friendly class, we will explore the different forms of flowers with some hands-on dissection and then practice identification in groups. We will continue practicing our identification during the field trip portion. Let’s learn why this plant family is so important to wildlife as we observe the number of pollinators their flowers attract.
The workshop is in two parts on two separate days: classroom and field.
Saturday, August 22 – Classroom Session (9:30– 12 pm)
Saturday, August 29 – In the field location TBD (8:30-11:30 am)
ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Clare Walker teaches plant and pollinator identification and classes on natural basketry and more around Maryland, including programs at Nature Forward, the US Botanical Gardens, and Irvine Nature Center. She delights in native plants and especially their relationships to wildlife and people. Her classes encourage us to cherish our local plants, whether through basketry using natural materials, making herbal remedies, enjoying foods from foraged plants, or gardening with natives. Clare previously worked as a naturalist for Maryland State Parks and then as an environmental outreach specialist for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
