About this Event
Intro to the Fleshy Fungi of the NC Arboretum
with Jonathan Horton
Saturday, August 29 | 9am - 12pm
This workshop will consist of an introductory lecture about fungi with a focus on commonly encountered groups of fleshy fungi in western North Carolina. The group will then foray on the grounds at the NC Arboretum to collect fresh specimens. We will then return to the class to go over steps involved in fungal identification including the use of dichotomous keys and microscopy. We will discuss interesting ecological information about the specimens we collect and identify.
Jonathan Horton is Chair of the Biology Department at the University of North Carolina Asheville, where he has been working and teaching since 2003. He earned a B.S. in Biology from UNC-Chapel Hill, a M.S in Biology at Appalachian State University and a Ph.D. in Forest Ecology Northern Arizona University. Jonathan is a plant physiological ecologist, but wears a lot of hats at UNCA where he teaches Botany, Plant Physiology, Mycology, Forest Ecology, Desert Ecology, and non-majors offerings. His research interests are varied and include the characteristics of and impacts from invasive, non-native species; conservation biology of rare and threatened species and communities, plant-fungal interactions, and ecological forest management.
