Our sport lead climbing course is designed for climbers who are looking to transition from outdoor top-rope or indoor sport climbing to lead climbing. Lead climbing involves the climber clipping and placing the rope into pre-placed protection as they ascend the route, requiring a higher level of skill and technique. By the end of the course you will have the knowledge and confidence to safely lead on your own.
Instruction is 1:4 with experienced guides
Dates and Timings:
Saturday 23 November: 8am - 5pm
Sunday 24 November: 8am - 1pm
Pre-requisites:
NZAC Member (non members are welcome to apply but must join the NZAC in order to be accepted onto the course - there are no exceptions)
Under 18 must have parental/guardian permission and must be at least 16 to attend.
This course is suitable for climbers who are already comfortable with top-rope climbing and have some experience lead climbing. At a minimum you must know how to top rope belay without a gri gri.
What will be taught:
Balance, movement and technique on rock
Sport lead climbing
Lead belaying (not with a gri gri)
Abseiling
Transition at a sport anchor station/cleaning a climb
Knots
Equipment and its use
Equipment Required:
Harness (please provide)
Rock shoes (please provide)
Chalk bag (optional)
Climbing helmet (Can be provided if requested)
ATC type belay device and HMS/Pear shaped locking biner (can be provided if requested)
Safety/Anchor chain and small locking biner (can be provided if requested)
Short prusik (1.3m total untied length) and small locking biner (can be provided if requested)
Equipment can be purchased at Aspiring Safety, Bivouac or Further Faster and all give NZAC members discounts.
Cost
$180 will cover one and a half days, instruction, plus any of the equipment listed free of charge if requested.
Refund
A full refund will only be given for genuine reason if withdrawing from the course or if we have enough time to find a replacement for your spot.
