Intro to Re-Use/Repurposed Bookbinding

Class Duration - 2 sessions: Wednesday evenings

June 3 and June 10, 6-8 p.m.

Bookbinding can be the start of a deep understanding of craft and concept by exploring what can be bound together! Learn beginner’s techniques and skills for creating a variety of books using recycled and re-purposed materials. Over this two-session course, participants will discover possibilities for a budget-minded creative: using only found and recycled materials such as food packaging, cardboard boxes, and salvaged clothing, an array of book forms will be introduced such as saddle stitch, stab bindings, and other non-adhesive bindings. Considerations for archival properties, adhesives, and book structure will be shared in the second session. Come away with 4-5 different books to be used for writing, sketching, or collecting.

Experience Level:

This class is geared toward beginners :)

Artist Bio:

Regin Igloria is a multidisciplinary artist and educator based in Chicago. His drawings, artists’ books, sculptures, and performances portray the human condition as it relates to the natural environment and inhabited spaces. With a background in arts administration and education, he founded North Branch Projects, an extension of his studio practice that builds connections through the book arts. His work creates crossover between various communities and populations, aiming to broaden the roles of both artists and non-artists. Igloria has taught at places such as Marwen, Rhode Island School of Design, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Snow City Arts, and Carthage College. He received a 3Arts Next Level Teaching Artist and Individual Award as well as local, national, and international grants and support throughartist residencies. His work has been exhibited internationally. He received his MFA from Rhode Island School of Design.

Getting There/Where to Park:

Humboldt - Free street parking is available on the street outside of The WasteShed, but spots may be limited so please plan accordingly. The Kimball bus stops right outside our doors! Please let us know if you need wheelchair access.
