Songs Inside is a sweeping, deeply compelling feature documentary that chronicles the transformative journey of a small group of incarcerated women in Australia. Over the course of six months, guided by the visionary First Nations singer-songwriter Nancy Bates, these women discover the profound, restorative power of music. As they learn to write and sing, the creative process fearlessly unearths their raw struggles with addiction, deep-seated trauma, and the overwhelming anxiety of what awaits them after release.
Yet, amid the harsh complexities of Pr*son life, music emerges as a universal force for hope and radical change. The women's vulnerable journey culminates in a breathtaking, historic milestone: the largest concert ever staged inside an Australian Pr*son. Accompanied by a towering professional symphony orchestra, they perform their truth for an audience of over 200 fellow residents and special guests. This awe-inspiring cinematic achievement has resonated far beyond the cell blocks, recently sweeping Australia’s most prestigious cinematic honors, including the massive CinefestOz Film Prize and the Documentary Australia Award at the Sydney Film Festival.
Following the screening, DJ Ramblin’ Rose (Beckie Rose-Bowman) of WMMT’s Calls From Home will take the stage. She will share original music created by men in maximum-security prisons across Central Appalachia, highlighting how WMMT is bringing these hidden voices to a wider audience and building a vital, supportive community for incarcerated artists.
