Internet Avalanche Attack

The Internet Avalanche (IA) is a recent type of attack (2024) that has the potential to significantly degrade network performance across enterprise and industrial environments. Unlike conventional cyber attacks that target specific assets or data, IA events exploit systemic network behaviour to trigger cascading effects, resulting in widespread latency, instability, and in some cases, random termination of services. This session will provide a technical overview of how Internet Avalanche attacks are initiated and propagated. Through practical examples, the presentation will examine how IA manifests in real-world networks, how it can be identified, and the indicators of compromise or degradation that engineers should monitor and how to proactively adapt systems to reduce exposure.

Walter graduated with degrees in Electronics and Computer Science and his PhD was in Computer Engineering. He has more than 40 years experience in computer and telecom projects and his company has been providing leading edge computer and telecom solutions for more than 25 years. He has been involved with several Cyber events and AI projects where ordinary control systems had failed.
