FREE EVENT Rain or Shine! International Observe the Moon Night is a worldwide celebration of lunar science and exploration and occurs in early fall when the Moon is around first quarter. Join us for hands-on activities, telescope and binocular Moon observation, themed story time, and more! Event activities will take place inside the museum and outdoors in the Museum Park*. Activities for the evening include:
• Enjoy interactive stories at our Stellar Story Corner.
• View the Moon through telescopes and binoculars and get stargazing tips from members of Cape Fear Astronomical Society.
• Color your own space helmet and pose for pictures with your “astronaut crew”.
• Build a Moon Phaser to see the order of the Moon’s phases.
• Learn to measure angular distance with your hand and find your way around the night sky.
• Join the fictional Lunar Travel Bureau and create an advertisement to encourage vacationing on Mars.
• Unleash your inner graffiti artist as you tag the Museum Park with Moon-inspired chalk art.
• Purchase tasty snacks and beverages from Kona Ice and other food trucks.
*In the event of inclement weather, some outdoor activities can be moved inside the museum.
