Intermediate Level - Japanese Joinery - Baby Bathstool Course

The course (12hrs over 2 days) is hands-on learning of some basic Japanese carpentry techniques.
The course is designed for intermidiate level skills in using hand tools to make a tight-fitting joints only from wood.
Western red cedar, Japanese saws, chisels and other required tools are provided. Feel free to bring your own Japanese tools to try.

Though I’m trained in timber-framing, I’ve developed this stool from the principles taught to me over the years through my family. Whilst furniture is usually glued, I gave myself the task to create a stool using only wood to wood joinery similar to the technique in timber framing.

This course will focus on the techniques that enable this stool to take shape with seamless, invisible jointing. We will look at the direction of woodgrain, choosing it for its properties that align with its purpose in a stool, planing, marking up, sawing, chiselling and assembly. This course is completely with traditional hand tools only.
