By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
✔️ Describe the functional relationship between the jaw, neck, and skull
✔️ Identify and assess common dysfunctions of the TMJ and craniocervical region
✔️ Develop interdisciplinary care plans integrating physical therapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, speech-language pathologists, myofunctional therapists, and dentists
✔️ Apply clinical reasoning to manage craniofacial pain, headaches, and temporomandibular disorders (TMD)
TMJ & Pathology Insights:
✔️ Explain the progression of intracapsular TMJ disc pathology as an early stage of dysfunction
✔️ Understand how disc displacement can progress to anterior disc subluxation
✔️ Describe craniomandibular parafunction (e.g., teeth grinding) as a source of micro-repetitive trauma
✔️ Recognize how loaded gliding of the TMJ, combined with systemic joint laxity, contributes to degenerative joint disease
✔️ Identify major causes of condylar height loss and resulting facial asymmetry
✔️ Recognize signs and symptoms of vascular irritation affecting the TMJ
Whole-Body Connections:
✔️ Evaluate the impact of descending occlusal issues on spinal and pelvic alignment
✔️ Discuss findings (e.g., Aqualizer study) related to iliac crest asymmetry and malocclusion
✔️ Understand ascending influences, such as leg length discrepancies, on the head and neck
✔️ Predict the effects of oral habits in both children and adults
Clinical Application & Treatment:
✔️ Apply safe and effective examination and treatment techniques to maxillofacial soft and hard tissues
✔️ Use manual and muscular techniques for disc subluxation management
✔️ Discuss the role of removable interocclusal appliances in joint stabilization
✔️ Apply Rocabado-based techniques, including the Roll Back method and pain mapping strategies
✔️ Implement airway stabilization approaches to help reduce clenching and snoring
