National Bird Day is here and there is no better place to celebrate than Intaka Island, our urban wetland where over 120 bird species have been recorded. Join us this January for a nature-packed morning where kids become junior builders and create their very own birdhouse from recycled natural materials found on the island.
What’s in store
*Build a Birdhouse Workshop main event*
Using safe recycled materials discovered and gathered on the island such as sticks, leaves, reeds and naturally shed feathers, kids will design and build a birdhouse while learning what birds need to feel safe including shelter, food, water and space.
*Bird Detective Walk and Hide Spotting*
We will explore the pathways and bird hides to spot some of Intaka’s wetland favourites. Keep an eye out for birds like the Malachite Kingfisher, Giant Kingfisher, African Spoonbill, Little Bittern, Purple Heron and African Darter.
When: 5 January 2026
Time: 9:00 AM to 13:00
Ages: 5 to 12 years old
Cost: R100 per child
