Intermediate and Advanced Field Trip: Biodiversity Snorkel Survey

  • Saturday, October 18th
  • 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
  • Drop-off at Torpedo Rays in Dartmouth & pick-up at Sandy Cove Beach in Terrence Bay
  • For girls and gender diverse youth ages 12-18
  • Pay-what-you-can, full cost is $60

Join Terranaut Club and CPAWS Nova Scotia for an immersive field trip designed for youth ages 12–18 with a keen interest in marine biology and conservation! This intermediate and advanced field trip will take participants into the vibrant nearshore waters of Nova Scotia for a guided snorkel survey, combining exploration, science, and stewardship in an unforgettable day outdoors.

This field trip invites youth to develop their snorkeling skills and take part in a real biodiversity survey—identifying local marine species, recording data, and learning research techniques in the field. Participants will discover the incredible diversity of seaweed, invertebrates, and fishes that call Nova Scotia’s coastline home, while exploring the vital role these ecosystems play in ocean health.

Throughout the experience, attendees will:

  • Practice safe and responsible snorkeling techniques
  • Use field guides and data forms to identify and catalogue marine life
  • Learn about local conservation challenges—from invasive species to climate impacts
  • Discuss the value of marine protected areas and community science in safeguarding ocean habitats
  • Participant in citizen science by taking turns using underwater cameras and uploading photos onto iNaturalist
  • Be a scientist for the day alongside CPAWS NS and learn more about careers in Conservation

No prior snorkel experience is required, but participants must be comfortable in the water and be able to swim. All necessary equipment and safety instructions will be provided. Get ready to dive in, contribute to real conservation efforts, and see Nova Scotia’s underwater world like never before!

Participants should come prepared with sunscreen, a bathing suit, towel, packed lunch, and water bottle. More details to follow.

Unlike our overnight programs, there is no nomination process for field trips. Registration is first come, first served, and can be completed on the program’s Eventbrite page. This program is pay-what-you-can, and your donation must be made upon registering. If you are not able to make an online donation, please contact Alanna at coordinator[at]terranautclub.com ASAP to reserve a space. If the program is full and you would like to be placed on the waiting list, please contact Alanna.
