About this Event
The World Affairs Council of Western Massachusetts will present an Instant Issues lunchtime discussion with Dr. Javier Corrales, Dwight W. Morrow 1895 Professor of Political Science and Department Chair of Political Science at Amherst College, on Autocracy Rising: How Venezuela Transitioned to Authoritarianism. The program will take place on Wednesday, September 10 from noon to 1 pm at 1350 Main Street, 9th Floor Gallery, in downtown Springfield.
A frequent World Affairs Council speaker, Javier Corrales is Dwight W. Morrow 1895 Professor of Political Science at Amherst. In 2015, Corrales coined the term autocratic legalism to explain how Venezuela transitioned to authoritarianism by using the legal system to impose autocracy. Corrales is the author of many publications and his most recent book is Autocracy Rising: How Venezuela Transitioned to Authoritarianism (2022).
For those who purchase a meal, box lunches with a choice of sandwich--turkey, tuna, roast beef, vegetarian--will be available (first come, first served). Lunches also include deli salad, a cookie, chips, and soda or water. (Attendees may bring their own lunch or choose not to eat.)
Registration deadline for a lunch provided is Friday, September 5.
