In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Waupaca Historical Society will host a program entitled, “Inspiring Poems by Danes in America” on Thursday, April 16 at 6 pm at the Holly History and Genealogy Center. The program will be presented by Michael G. Koehler, Ph.D., owner of the historic Danes Hall of Waupaca. Koehler will explore the role poetry played in the Danish-American immigrant experience during the peak years of Danish immigration between 1860 and 1910.
As Danish immigrants settled across the Midwest, they faced many hardships while building new lives in America. Poetry and music became important cultural forces that helped unite communities and inspire perseverance. The presentation will highlight the works of Danish-American poets including Adam Dan and F. L. Grundtvig, who frequently visited Waupaca and found inspiration in the Wisconsin wilderness.
Koehler’s own ancestors immigrated from Denmark to Waupaca in the 1860s, and he has spent years collecting and studying the poems and writings that inspired the area’s earliest Danish settlers. Koehler also serves on the Board of Directors of the National Museum of Danish America in Elk Horn, Iowa.
This program is open to the public. Admission is free, and all are welcome.
