How Physiological Processes Can Affect Social Behavior
Although many factors can influence how people think and behave in social situations, one important factor that does not get much attention involves people's physiological processes. Changes in people's immune system activity and hormone profiles can affect a wide range of social behaviors. This talk will cover two different areas – first, an overview of how people's social behavior changes when their immune system is fighting off an illness and second, how changes in women's hormones over the course of the menstrual cycle and due to use of hormonal contraceptives can affect psychological processes such as wanting to socialize and dealing with stress.
About the presenter:
Dr. Anastasia Makhanova will present. She is a social psychologist who studies how people's perceptions of others around them can fluctuate depending on people's motives and internal biological processes. She received her BA from Hendrix College and her MS and PhD from Florida State University. She has been at the University of Arkansas since 2019.
