Insider's Tours take guests inside some of Charleston's finest buildings, seldom open to the public. These tours are led by noted professionals such as architects, contractors, or architectural historians, with in-depth interpretation focused on Charleston's unique architectural styles, preservation ethic, and interior design. Each tour includes a unique set of 3-4 properties with a refreshments stop, and lasts approximately 2.5 hours. In the early 1800s, Charleston's development expanded beyond the bounds of the old walled city and even further northward establishing some of the city's earliest suburbs. It was at this time that the idea of building suburban villas became popular, particularly in the neighborhood of Mazyck-Wraggborough. Unlike more crowded parts of the city to the south, these rural areas at the time afforded considerably larger lots that enabled houses to be constructed with their façades facing along the street rather than perpendicular in the single house style. Earlier houses tended to have more refined detail with smaller proportions than these newer, grander villas. Often, they also had dependency buildings behind the main house that served as living spaces for enslaved workers, kitchen houses, laundries, stables, and privies. Those that survive have more recently been converted into additional living spaces or another residence.
