Just book on the date of the first class

The first class: We’ll be dyeing yarn and reclaimed fiber in indigo vats, creating a myriad of subtle shades of blue, like sky and sea. I provide yarn and fabric for weavers. You can bring your own materials and clothes to dye too!

The second class: I’ll be teaching frame loom weaving, focusing on really deep chunky texture, perfect for using our ripped ribbons created from our dyed upcycled fabric.

This will be a really immersive experience, perfect for those totally new to indigo and also weaving! We’ll be dyeing and weaving in my beautiful outdoor shade garden studio.

I will be teaching some different techniques from my usual 5 hours weaving class, so you’ll learn some new things if you’ve taken that!

But I will also start at the very beginning of weaving, so anyone can take this, even if you’ve never woven before.

We’ll be exploring getting subtle shades of blue by overdyeing and re-dipping our pieces, but note this isn’t a Shibori class focusing on patterns. We’ll be shredding the fabric into long ribbons perfect for loops and fringe and twists. This will give you a taste of the magical indigo process, which you can take further into future investigations with Shibori.

All materials and tools will be provided, and you are welcome to bring a bunch more fabric and yarn from your own collection, so we can dye until the indigo vats are exhausted.

I’ll provide each student on dyeing day with:
  • nitrile gloves or heavy-duty rubber gloves to share
  • 100% cotton yarn skeins in 153 yards bulky , 125 yards dk organic , 328 yards sport
  • 3 yards of upcycled fabric pieces diverted from the waste stream
  • an indigo vat shared with 2-3 people, and all the water for rinse buckets, washing, etc!
  • I’ll handle the set up, clean up, washing and drying!
  • various blocks and rubber bands for patterns
</ul>
On weaving day:
  • all looms and tools provided! A few of the looms will be available to rent after class.
  • you’ll have access to all kinds of colors of yarns and warp threads to add in with your indigo blues.
  • you’ll have dyed more than enough fibers for several more future projects on your own!
  • sparkling water and wrapped snacks

Dyeing indigo is an alchemical-like process with a substance that is more like sourdough than paint— it must be nurtured and coaxed and rested. It’s a living culture and dipping the fabric in requires you to hold your breath and observe the bubbles going in, and the subtle changes of color to know when the bath needs to rest — it’s own kind of meditation. The importance of Indigo spans many cultures, and is both viewed as a sacred plant, and also has associations with manual laborers, as blue farmer and factory dungaree work clothes were once dyed with indigo.

I'm excited to share these two processes married together!

The Garden Workshops are held in a small urban forest with towering heritage Douglas Fir trees, that create a cool and pleasant shade garden, even in the height of summer.
Workshops are held rain or shine, because there is a covered workshop and a festival tent.
