Join us for a meditative, hands-on session to learn about the art of batik. This introductory-level workshop will walk you through the basics of how to use a canting, a traditional pen-like tool used to design batik tulis or "handwritten" batik. You'll also learn about specific batik patterns and the history of how fabric can be used as a form of storytelling. You will use batik tools and methods to create a patterned cotton bandana, and we will also lead you through the process of naturally dyeing your bandana with natural Indigo.

This workshop will provide plenty of time for you to work on your design, and is suitable for both beginners and those who already have some experience with Batik and natural dyes.

About the Facilitator

Bernarda Antony is on a journey to storytell the legends, motifs and meaning behind Indonesian batik. An alumni of LaSalle International College in Jakarta and Sugino Fashion College in Tokyo, Bernarda shares the technique and tradition of storytelling with fashion through The Batik Library, offering unique pieces that blend distinctive patterns with a modern, gender-neutral design for a one-of-a-kind look. Bernarda also offers workshops introducing batik making to hobbyists and community members in North America.

You can usually find Bernarda in the crowd of her local craft market or behind-the-scenes in the costumes department, and always craving a martabak.
