We honor the drum for those who came before us and the sacred duty of playing while bearing witness to countless births and deaths, beating the drum while the sowing of seeds and the harvest of crops... Every culture on Earth passed on this ancient tool of ceremony, and now it is our turn to lead the charge. Together, we will weave our shared stories into the making of the very tool that will bring a voice to the sacred sound of Mama Earth, reawakening her heartbeat. Join us as we continue the honorable lineage of drum carriers and drum makers.
The creation of the drum is a ceremony in itself, an active prayer of the body and mind. As we birth our own drum, may we remember that the heart drum of our ancestors -- of our global ancestors -- and recognise it as the same one that is beating inside us today.
About your drum:
-Indigo is a color that signifies dignified power, integrity, and sincerity. Traditionally a color that supports peace, communication, and meditation, you’ll have the option to do solid indigo or any tie dye pattern of your choosing. As a plant, its roots are used for protection, as it is seen as a symbol of protection and healing. In some cultures, known as the “Divine Tree,” dying with indigo plants is a deeply spiritual practice, with women dyers enlisting guidance from the spirit world as they work.
-The drum head is made with deer medicine, which taps us into our heart space, encourages us to listen with both with our ears and intuition, just as a deer does in the woods. Deers exemplify grace, effortlessly gliding and leaping through their forest life.
-The 15” frame is made of cedar. A gift of the Earth that is known to purify and protect, and is also celebrated as a symbol of strength and incorruptibility.
In this 9-hour workshop (10 hr day, including a 1hr meal break), we will learn, share, and co-create these sacred instruments together. We will give thanks to the deer and cedar, acknowledging the lives they lived, and for sharing themselves with us. You will dye the hide, punch holes, decorate the frame, lace the drum, and make a mallet, all while sharing in the wisdom of community, together.
Options for the color of your finished drum vary from light sky blue, to bright blue, to dark navy blue and even black. You are in creative control of the design and saturation of color on your drum. We will show you several designs (spiral, accordion, ombre, and sunburst) for you to choose from. You will fold, tie, and dip-dye your hide with the magick of the Indigo plant.

The studio is a short walk from downtown Chillicothe. Ability to walk or drive to coffee shops and restaurants. Recommended: Paper City Coffee for breakfast, snack or lunch, just 3 blocks away, as well as The Pour House for lunch or dinner. In addition, there is a bakery and boba place, an Italian restaurant, pizza places, a breakfast/brunch spot at The Coop, a Hibachi restaurant, and more within walking distance. Fast food and many additional restaurants are located just a few minutes' drive away on Bridge Street.
Parking is free on most of Paint Street near the studio as well as on surrounding streets. Additional parking at the Main Chillicothe Library parking lot across the street.
