Discover the amazing transformations of indigo, the enchanting natural blue dye of centuries! In this workshop, fiber artist Jan Quarles will be your guide for an exploration of indigo and basic shibori techniques. You’ll learn about the history of indigo as a dye and its use in different cultures around the world and across the centuries. Indigo is unlike other natural dyes as it’s a cold process. We will use two kinds of indigo vats and you will learn how to make a small vat for home use. In class, you’ll explore many marking techniques, including folding, clamping (itajime) and wrapping (arashi)and other traditional Japanese techniques as well as more contemporary approaches. You’ll then dip those natural fiber pieces into the vat several times for the beautiful blues Your takeaway pieces will include two tea towels and a bandanna, and you’ll have plenty of fabric for practice. At the end of class, you can dip one personal natural fabric piece you bring from home (no larger than a t-shirt). Wear old clothes you don’t mind getting blue!
