Abstract: Indigenous land defenders occupy precarious positions in defending their lands. Contrary to government and industry stereotypes that portray Indigenous peoples as opponents of development, Indigenous peoples enact sacred legal obligations to land protection that convey their deep knowledge of their lands and heritage. This talk focuses on the community response to an oil spill that occurred in Heiltsuk waters and the community activism that responded to the environmental incident. It analyzes how responders addressed the crisis using ecological knowledge to counter the devastation caused by the spill.
