Indigenous Film Nights | Stories from The Heart of Nature hosted by David Metcalfđ Date: Saturday, April 6th
đ Time: 19:00
đ Venue: Usada Bali
STORY TELLING FROM THE INDIGENOUS PERSPECTIVE
The documentary films that we will be showing in most cases will be produced and filmed by indigenous film makers, mostly from Indonesia but also from selected countries.
The purpose of these monthly film nights will be promoting cultural awareness and understanding. We believe indigenous films can educate audiences about the history, struggles and experience of Indigenous peoples, promoting empathy and cross cultural understanding.
Indigenous filmmakers will have this platform to tell their own stories, challenging dominant narratives and stereotypes, and asserting their rights to self representation.
These films will raise awareness about land rights, self determination, the fight for social justice and promoting positive and solution based alternatives.
These films can help revitalise indigenous languages and cultures particularly among the younger generations by showcasing traditional practices, stories and languages.
We will also discuss ways that indigenous communities and film makers can be supported and provided with more opportunity to tell their stories.
All films will have English subtitles.
After the film screenings there will be opportunity for discussion and Q and A
The indigenous film nights will be hosted by David Metcalf the co founder of the Bali International Indigenous film festival and a supporter of indigenous communities in various islands in Indonesia over the past 13 years since he has been based in Bali. He is also a film producer, professional photographer and organised the Indigenous gathering in Bali in 2018 with Ranu Welum, an activist group based in Central Borneo which brought together over 200 indigenous people from Indonesia and 8 different countries. He is also the founder of the Togetherness Project which organises community based indigenous tourism journeys in Bali and Indonesia.
