Librarians emerge as first responders in the fight for democracy and our First Amendment rights in the power documentary, “The Librarians.” As librarians well know, controlling the flow of ideas means control over communities. When Texas lawmakers seek to review a list of books, librarians find themselves on the frontlines of a national battle. Across the U.S., librarians unite against library collection standards that include restrictions on race-related and LGBTQIA+ content.
“The Librarians” draws on historical context to explore the broader implications for education and public life. A brief introduction and discussion with Book Riot senior editor Kelly Jensen and former YA librarian Kristin Pekoll will follow.
This event is an Indie Lens Pop-Up screening and is part of the McHenry County Libraries United. Co-sponsors include the Algonquin Area Public Library, Cary Area Public Library, Crystal Lake Public Library, Harvard Diggins Library, Huntley Area Public Library, Johnsburg Library, Marengo-Union Public Library, McHenry Public Library, Nippersink Public Library, and Woodstock Public Library.
It takes place in McHenry County College’s Luecht Auditorium (room B170), located at 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14, Crystal Lake. For ages 14 and up.
