Indiana Audubon Winter Eagle Watch: Mississinewa

Join Indiana Audubon (IAS) for a special look at the winter spectacle of eagles along the upper Wabash River and reservoir floodplains. Over the past decade, northern Indiana has seen a significant increase in wintering Bald Eagles. Today, this region rivals other prominent Indiana wintering sites, boasting impressive numbers. Some counts exceed 100 birds in a morning!

This special photography based field trip will meet at Mississinewa Dam Spillway on Sunday, January 18th, at 2 p.m. ET. Registered participants will meet at the Mississinewa Dam Spillway parking lot by the tailwaters. From there we'll caravan to a few areas to view both feeding and roosting eagles. This trip will spend more time at individual eagle sites to maximize photography opportunities, compared to our other eagle-watching trips. The trip is led annually by Indiana Audubon member and birder April Raver and lasts about three hours.

Pre-registration is required, as these annual eagle-watching field trips fill quickly and participation is limited to 20 people. Registration costs $5 for Indiana Audubon members and $10 for non-members. All registered participants must review and agree to the Indiana Audubon Field Trip Release before joining any Indiana Audubon trip or event.

This trip involves minimal walking; no hiking is required. Most birding will be done from vehicles or at short roadside stops. Some stops may involve stepping onto paved or compacted gravel surfaces. Restrooms are available in recreation areas, though not all are fully accessible. Benches or seating at viewing points may be limited. Dress for winter weather birding.
