About this Event
Speaker: Catherine Quillman- local author and former arts and history journalist.
What is the real story of Hannah Freeman, the 18th-century Native American, popularly known as “Indian Hannah?” Not only was she born locally, but she returned with her family and members of the “Turtle” clan to stay in an encampment at the historic Anvil Tavern near the present-day entrance to Longwood Gardens. The illustrated lecture will highlight Hannah’s importance to the Quaker community, William Penn’s influences on the local attitudes about Native Americans, and his work to return the land along the Brandywine to the Lenape.
This free series of talks focused on local history is presented by the Kennett Heritage Center and Kennett Township Historical Commission, made possible by a grant from Hadley.
