Incorporating Native Plants into your Urban (or Semi-Urban) Garden: Integrative Gardening for Beauty and Resiliency in our Urban Environment
This presentation will explore how native plants can help you meet your gardening objectives while building community resilience, adapting to climate change, and supporting pollinators and other species that are a vital part of our fragile ecological systems. Learn the basics about native plants, why they are important, and why people should not be shy about seeking them out as a part of their garden plant palette.
Susie Smith is a long-time gardener in Eugene, Oregon, and has been a certified Master Gardener volunteer since 2012. Smith's professional career has focused on water and energy resources and public infrastructure, with over 35 years of experience working with local governments and water quality professionals Oregon. She retired from the City of Springfield, OR as its Public Works Director in 2011 and started Stony Creek Consulting, which focuses on supporting local governments in meeting water quality and wastewater/stormwater infrastructure challenges and long term planning needs. She served as the Executive Director of the Oregon Association of Clean Water Agencies (ACWA) through 2023, and now manages ACWA's special projects focused on green infrastructure, resource recovery, climate resilience and toxics reduction strategies. She has a BS in Conservation of Natural Resources from UC Berkeley and a MS in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Oregon. Her passions include gardening, cooking, hiking and SCUBA diving.
