This presentation outlines the systems & structures that generate mass incarceration and examines the mental health effects on incarcerated adults as well as their families and loved ones. Criminal justice reform advocates Jerry Hatchett & Alice Nichols share their lived experience during the 7 years Jerry spent in jail as well as his return home and re-entry into the community. Their story shines a light on a deeply stigmatized, yet sadly common, occurrence and will provide insight into survival, hope, and healing for life after incarceration.
Jerry Hatchett is originally from Chicago and moved to Rockford in 2011. He is an alumni of Rock Valley College, where he majored in Manufacturing Engineering Technology. He currently lives in Loves Park where he is an expert in rebuilding–both cars and lives touched by incarceration. He hopes to increase his reach in helping others and becoming a community resource.
Alice Nichols is originally from Wheaton and moved to Rockford in 2005. She is an alumni of Moody Bible Institute in Chicago with a degree in Urban Ministry and DePaul University in Chicago with a degree in English Literature. She lives in Loves Park and is employed at RAMP Disability Resources & Services.
