Thursday, June 25
Doors Open at 5:30 PM; Lecture from 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM
$10 per person. Free for RLA members. Free onsite parking.
Based on Dr. Elizabeth Lara’s ethnographic research exploring relationships among people, plants, and prisons, this talk will focus on a series of iconic Californian landscapes. Dr. Lara’s work is concerned with the role of horticulture in public heritage sites that highlight distinct histories of incarceration, including Alcatraz Island and Manzanar. The talk will also feature discussion of the work of Land Together, an organization that for over twenty years has been growing gardens in prisons to support the wellbeing and liberation of people impacted by incarceration.
Dr. Elizabeth Lara currently works as a freelance gardener, a garden educator, and a facilitator for a domestic violence intervention program.
Doors will open at 5:30 pm, and the lecture will start at 6 pm. We hope you join us!
