ABOUT THE MUSIC
In his third string quartet (“In iij Noct.“), Georg Friedrich Haas continues his experiments with the possibilities of music performed in the dark, as established in Adolf Wölfli and in vain. Darkness, however, is not present in this piece merely as an absence of light, but becomes the key theme of the work: the whole piece is played in complete darkness, the musicians can see neither their music nor their fellow performers, and are seated as far apart from one another as possible.
The 3rd String Quartet is composed as a verbal score, with many details and decisions left to the performers. They communicate solely through the sounds produced by their instruments, inviting one another into musical processes, accepting these invitations or responding in kind with an invitation of their own – and always deciding for themselves how far they choose to go down each path together, before turning back.

ABOUT ORANGE ROAD
Orange Road Quartet is dedicated to the performance of new works and modern classics, creating engaging, listener-centered experiences. As the quartet in residence at the University of South Carolina and 2024-2026 Cuker and Stern Quartet in Residence at the Mannes School of Music, they are mentored by Ari Streisfeld and the JACK Quartet.
Recent highlights include performances at the South Carolina Chamber Music Festival and the Southern Exposure Series, where they played George Crumb’s Black Angels. They have held artistic residencies at UC Davis, the University of Florida, and Duke University, premiering and recording works by student composers.
Passionate about education and community engagement, they bring music beyond traditional concert halls, performing in schools, parks, and cafés. Past projects include collaborations with composers and interdisciplinary artists, as well as performances at the Cortona Sessions for New Music in Italy.
Orange Road makes the Mannes School of Music and the University of South Carolina their homes.
