Storytelling shapes our view of ourselves, the cosmos, and the divine. Join Jeremy Crawford, formerly a lead designer of Dungeons & Dragons and now a game director at Critical Role, for a talk about the role of story in the development of our spiritual practices, theologies, and play. Starting with a meditation on the prologue of John’s gospel — including a fresh translation — Crawford will explore the entangled life of narrative and the religious imagination. Whether we seek mystical union with the divine, a deeper understanding of spiritual tools like the tarot, or a greater sense of empowerment in a roleplaying game, are we ready to wield the wand of the magician-storyteller? Following his talk, Jeremy will be joined by Erik Davis to continue the conversation.

Jeremy Crawford is the game director at Critical Role's Darrington Press. Before joining Critical Role, he was the lead designer of the Player’s Handbook (2014 and 2024) for Dungeons & Dragons, and he oversaw the development of rules for D&D over the past decade. He also led or co-led the design of the Monster Manual (2025), Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything (2020), Eberron: Rising from the Last War (2019), the Dungeon Master’s Guide (2014), and many other D&D books. In the years before he worked on D&D, he co-designed the game Blue Rose and wrote for the games Mutants & Masterminds and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. For over five years, he has been one of the storytellers and performers in the live-play show Acquisitions Incorporated. Prior to becoming a game designer, Jeremy earned a master's degree in theology at Saint Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary and studied at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley.
