Amelia Earhart was a pioneer in aviation and achieved international fame for being the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean as a passenger. In 1929, she came to Johnstown for a visit for the dedication of our first airport, and then in 1932, she would go on to be the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic.
In 1937, she vanished while attempting to fly around the world with navigator Fred Noonan, sparking one of aviation’s greatest and most enduring mysteries. Nearly a century later, archaeologist Dr. Richard Pettigrew is preparing to lead a groundbreaking expedition to Nikumaroro, a remote island in the Pacific. The team’s focus: The “Taraia Object,” a recently identified anomaly that could be a remnant of Earhart’s Lockheed Electra plane. In this lecture, Dr. Pettigrew will share why this discovery is so compelling, what the expedition will do to investigate it and the challenges the field team expects to face. Join us for a first look at how this journey may finally bring answers to one of history’s greatest enigmas.
