In search Newcastles Notable Women

This ride is one of a series of Notable Women rides north east, throughout 2026 and 2027 whereby Cycle with Jan and Cycling 4 Everyone (north east) limited are collaborating with Breeze North East to encourage and support new and returning women riders to join us! This ride is also supported by Cycling Uk’s 'Big Bike Revival' a national programme that supports adults to build the skills, confidence, and motivation to cycle more often.
This series of rides visit places where notable women from the region have lived and worked, as well as riding to the locations of notable women we will stop and learn some interesting and important north east women's history who have each contributed to our lives today, some feminists, some not! We encourage you to join other Notable Women rides elsewhere in the region, they can be reached by taking your bike on the train…how about trying it, I will be doing this in all cases. Do join us to find out more!
On this ride we will search for a number of notable women who have lived and worked in Newcastle visiting places that they were familiar with.

A short ride and lovely tootle around Newcastle on quiet roads and cycle paths and across the Town Moor, exploring with lots of places of historical interest relating to our notable women.
This ride will start and finish at Newcastles Central Station, NE1 5DL at the west pedestrian entrance, which faces the Centre For Life, Central Parkway. Anyone arriving by train contact Jan to let her know which train you are on and will meet you!
The ride is short and we will take our time to meander west to join Newcastles Central Cycle Route 1, protected cycle lane, before cycling through Elswick and Fenham. Unfortunately we can't avoid wee hills or busyness on this part of the route but our ride leaders will support all riders, waiting for everyone. The reward will be a refreshing ride through Nuns Moor Park and across the Town Moor and after here we will ride back into the City one Newcastle Central Route 4 and route 725, the Great North Cycleway and then meander back to the station.
We will take refreshments on route and will be offering complimentary drinks and sandwich for participants.
Helmets are always advisable, as is clothing suitable for the weather. We also advise you to bring along an inner tube suitable for your wheel, a bike pump and tyre levers. A bottle of water and sweets are also useful.
The inspiration for these rides are from the Angels of the North Notable Women of the North East Books volume 1 and 2, written by Joyce Quin and Moira Kilkenny who have both given their support to Cycle With Jan in carrying out these rides.
First time riders welcome - come and join us!
We encourage new riders to open an account and join Breeze Women only rides (not essential but its free and offers more support for women getting into cycling) By joining you Breeze you will also be invited to join other voluntary rides locally, in the region or nationally and meet likeminded women to ride with https://www.letsride.co.uk/breeze! What's not to like?!
Give me a call or message if I can help you with some confidence training or registering with Breeze Rides beforehand or if you want help with trains or anything? Jan 07718906358 See less
