Interpreting in the Mental Health & Substance settings is arguably the most challenging for sign language interpreters. This workshop will provide the intermediate to advanced interpreter with techniques specific to the mental health and substance abuse settings. These will include sign-to-voice interpreting of discourse form, applying the RID Code of Professional Conduct and coping with transference and countertransference issues. Attention will also be given to the emotional issues, both intra- and inter-psychic which these settings can bring to the fore.
Level 2: The Many Faces of Mental Health
Oct 25th, Time: 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM

We delve further into the information introduced in Level 1, including further discussion about decision making, language dysfluency, etiology, language deprivation, trauma and the intersection between mental health and legal interpreting.
