IN MANY TONGUES by D. Zisl Slepovitch (Klezmer Music)
About this Event
D. Zisl Slepovitch (Ph.D., musicology) presents, talks about, and performs the multifaceted and truly fascinating phenomenon of the macaronic — mixed language — songs of the Yiddish-speaking Jews in Eastern Europe and way beyond, as well those by their neighbors.
You will discover multilingualism as an immanent feature of the Jewish tongues.
You will learn about various functions that macaronic songs have historically performed across the board of the very diverse Jewish society, from education to secrecy to making fun to making the Jewish songs accessible to the gentile neighbors.
Lastly, you will have fun, because mixing languages is a fascinating game, attempted either spontaneously or deliberately. Zisl will accompany his singing on the keyboard.
