In Loving Memory - exploring Victorian death, mourning and remembrance

In anticipation of our upcoming Skylight gallery display In Loving Memory, join us for a one-day public conference run jointly between the University of Liverpool and the Museum of Liverpool. This event is free and open to everyone, especially those with an interest in history and archaeology, you do not need to be a specialist or amateur to join us.
Across the day we will hear from a range of experts who will discuss different methods of research from archaeological excavation to graveyard recording and object analysis. The conference will put these different techniques together to give us a better insight into how people in the past used death and commemoration to reflect their community identities, achievements and hopes for the afterlife. During the event we will hear how recent and ongoing research has revealed new insights into the ways in which the bereaved of different faiths and denominations coped with their loss, and remembered their relatives and friends. In particular we will explore ways in which Roman Catholics, Jews and Protestants remembered their dead, sometimes in periods of oppression or fear. We will cover periods from the 17th to early 20th century with a strong focus on the Victorians.
The public conference is run in collaboration between the Historical Archaeology Research Group within the Department of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology, University of Liverpool and the Museum of Liverpool.

Visitors can book for the whole day or by conference session.
ABOUT THE DISPLAY
The upcoming display In Loving Memory will run in the Museum of Liverpool's Skylight gallery from 17 October 2026 until March 2027. The display will explore 19th century memorialisation from across cemeteries in Liverpool and has been developed in partnership with the University of Liverpool.
