An insight into Stockport's music clubs in the 1960's - The Manor Lounge, The Tabernacle and The Sinking Ship - with music & memories. In the 1960's Stockport had a vibrant club scene that shaped the lives of many of the town's teenagers who were able to see their music idols perform the hits of the day at The Tabernacle, The Manor Lounge and The Sinking Ship.
Many of the bands and musicians who played on Stockport's club circuit went on to become world renowned artists - names such as Elton John, Rod Stewart, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Small Faces, The Who, The Kinks and many more.
As part of The Stockport Music Story project with funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, we are pleased to have been able to honour these clubs with a commemorative record plaque in the locations where they stood.
For the last event in our 'In Conversation With' series, we are delighted to welcome the people who have been played such a big part in preserving the legacy of Stockport's sixties' clubs - Pam Howes, author and founder of The Manor Lounge Appreciation Society, Bernard Roberts, author of 'The Day The Tab Was Fab' documenting the history of The Tabernacle club on Middle Hillgate and John Sweeney, who as a teenager frequented The Sinking Ship in Royal Oak Yard and has an impressive collection of club membership memorabilia.
If you would love to hear more about this exciting chapter in Stockport's music history or you would like to come along and share your memories, please join us for our last event at Stockport Museum hearing the personal stories from Stockport's sixties' eternal teenagers - Berny, Pam and John.
Refreshments are provided free of charge. Our thanks to Stockport Council and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund for supporting this event.
