About this Event

Juniper by the Sea, the UK’s first East and South East Asian (ESEA) bookshop, is honoured to host an evening conversation with Rowena Chiu on the #MeToo movement, then and now.

About Rowena Chiu

Rowena Chiu is a Harvey Weinstein Survivor and #MeToo Activist & Advocate. Her story was featured in the original NYT Investigation, and SHE SAID, the book by Jodi Kantor & Megan Twohey and the movie by Universal Pictures. Rowena is an accomplished keynote speaker, and she has testified at the House Of Commons, the Massachusetts State House, and the State Of The Union. She is writing a memoir, a novel, and a screenplay, in addition to working as a global #MeToo activist, advocating for the rights of those who are oppressed or voiceless, in churches, schools, universities and workplaces around the world.

About the event

This event will consist of a 45 minute hosted conversation with Rowena Chiu on her insights into the #MeToo movement, the intersection with power dynamics through gender, race, seniority and wealth, with specific commentary on #MeToo and the East and South East Asian community.

The event will be followed by approximately 30 minutes of Q&A from the audience. Afterwards, there will be a tea and coffee reception and the opportunity to browse a curated selection of relevant reads in the pop-up bookshop.

Safeguarding statement

We are honoured to share the evening with guest speaker Rowena Chiu, and we look forward to welcoming you to the event.

This event will cover some difficult topics around sexual violence. We aim to hold our conversation with sensitivity and care. We will be doing our best not to discuss graphic or distressing details. In order to keep the event as safe and comfortable for everyone, during the Q+A or at the reception, we ask that audience members refrain from sharing personal stories or ask questions of a personal nature, as the panel do not have the expertise to provide appropriate support in these circumstances.

We know that the conversation may still be challenging and overwhelming for audience members. If you feel distressed by the content during the event, please feel that you can step out of the room at any time during the event, to get some fresh air, get a glass of water, or take a break. You can rejoin at any time, or choose not to return. Resources for support will be signposted at the event. Additionally, Rape Crisis England and Wales provide confidential support through their 24/7 free phone and online chat service on 0808 500 2222 and https://247sexualabusesupport.org.uk/
