About this Event
Join Zeno Cavalla (Artistic Director of ) as he offers two workshops about theatrical improv in Aug 2026!
WORKSHOP 1 - 'SURPRISE YOURSELF'
Fri 21 Aug 2026 (7.00pm-10.00pm)
One thing any improviser experiences on their journey is that trying to keep the scene under control does not help them. Being stuck in their own head, struggling to say the right thing, inevitably ends up making them look awkward, uncooperative, and not credible.
In this workshop, we'll try to overcome the experience of being stuck and then unlock ourselves. We must realise that surprise is not an enemy, but an ally. Every time we make this passage (as in this workshop), we get closer to the ideal of irrepressible misbehaving that we want to achieve on stage.
What if our partner doesn't surprise us? Don't worry, we'll learn to surprise ourselves!
Prerequisite:
- Completed training in basic improvisational theatre & comedy
- i.e. LIT's Level 1 course or equivalent
WORKSHOP 2 - 'COMMEDIA DELL'ARTE FOR IMPROVISERS'
Sat 22 Aug 2026 (10.00am-5.00pm, incl. 1hr lunch break)
This isn't a genre workshop; it has nothing to do with the stylistic tropes of the commedia dell'arte (e.g. improvising through masks). Instead, we focus on narrative instruments, techniques, and structures of the commedia dell'arte that have been used for over seven hundred years!
Zeno learned these tricks by working with some of the world's best commedia teachers. Through this workshop, he'll translate his learnings into accessible terms that improvisers can recognise and apply to spontaneous storytelling.
Seven centuries of cumulative experience guarantee that, when studied and performed with care, the commedia dell'arte doesn't contradict improv instincts, but instead offers useful frameworks that improvisers can utilise to their advantage!

ABOUT THE ORGANISERS
(LIT)’s mission is to enrich lives in Singapore through the art of improvisational theatre. BOUNDARIES & SAFETY
The organisers wish to be as accommodating as possible, so feel free to let them know if you have any specific needs (e.g. boundaries, triggers).
- We seek everyone's cooperation in making our classes an open and inclusive safe space, especially for women, queer, and neurodivergent improvisers to participate.
- We remind all attendees to be respectful & 'punch up' during their scenes (e.g. avoid homophobia, misogyny, racism, etc.)
