🎭 Improv Ensemble LabA 10-week practice-led programme in Improv.
Improv Ensemble Lab is a course designed for improvisers who want to deepen their artistic practice. The Lab assumes participants are comfortable with basic scene work and group improvisation, and centres on ensemble work.
🗓 Mondays, starting February 2
⏰ 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM

🧭 What we’ll explore
Across the 10 weeks, we’ll work on:
• Character creation
• Storytelling and long-form narrative
• Magical realism
• Split focus and collective creation
• Physical theatre
• Musical inspiration and soundscaping
• Multilingual narrative and scene work
The emphasis is on process, experimentation, and working as an ensemble. The Lab is designed to grow as a cohort across the term, allowing shared language and trust to develop over time.
🎭 Showcase
The term will conclude with a showcase. Participation is optional. Date and location TBC.
👥 Participant requirement
This programme is for improvisers who have completed at least an Intro to Improv or Improv 101 course (or equivalent experience) and are comfortable with basic scene work.
👤 About the instructor
Matías Avaca is an Argentine improviser based in Aotearoa New Zealand. He co-founded Mabel Impro and the Auckland Improv Festival, and is a driving force behind Laenye Productions, supporting Spanish-speaking and multicultural artists. Bridging linguistic and cultural divides through his work, Matías has taught and performed in over 15 countries.
