About this Event
Dive into a workshop where creativity, intention, and self-expression come alive. Led by Yasuko of Dragon Ikka, this experience introduces participants to the art of Japanese calligraphy while also offering the rare opportunity to carry their chosen kanji symbol onto their body through a flash tattoo by Roa of Roa Studios. You’ll leave with both a tangible piece of handmade art and, if you choose, a permanent design etched in ink—two ways to embody the meaning of your kanji. Paired with meditation, tea, and music, the workshop blends art, ritual, and reflection into a single unforgettable experience.
The workshop begins with an introduction to brush techniques and kanji fundamentals. Yasuko will guide you through the flow, rhythm, and energy of each character, followed by a live demonstration that illustrates how brush and ink bring kanji to life. Participants will then practice on paper, experimenting with strokes and discovering their own rhythm before committing to their final piece.
Once you’ve practiced and chosen a kanji that resonates, you’ll move on to your DIY project on a mini canvas or round wood hanging ornament. As you shape each stroke, your chosen character comes alive in color and texture, reflecting your focus, intention, and personal connection to the kanji. Music and herbal tea from The Pollen Patch create a grounding, immersive environment as you translate your practice into a finished artwork.
At the same time, the tattoo experience runs alongside the calligraphy. Roa, the studio’s owner, specializes in ceremonial tattoos and creates a customized experience for each guest. You can choose a symbol and receive a tattoo during the session, giving you a permanent, tangible expression of the kanji you’ve explored in your artwork. The combination of painting and tattooing allows you to embody your chosen kanji in two meaningful forms.
For those who want to carry their kanji without committing to a permanent tattoo, Marley will be offering henna designs during the workshop. This allows participants to experience their chosen symbol on the body temporarily, providing a creative, hands-on way to explore the art and meaning of their kanji without the permanence of ink. Henna is a playful, safe option for anyone curious about trying body art or wanting a beautiful keepsake of the workshop experience.
After finishing your artwork, Yasuko will lead a meditation with your kanji, helping you connect with the meaning of your word and reflect on the energy and intention invested in both your painting and your tattoo. This workshop is structured to let you learn, create, reflect, and carry the art forward, leaving with a piece of personal artwork, a meditation experience, and, if you choose, a flash tattoo.
Set in Roa Studios, a vibrant, colorful space where creativity and ceremony intersect, this workshop is immersive, hands-on, and memorable. Whether you come to explore calligraphy, try a tattoo for the first time, or experience both, you’ll leave with a unique, layered experience of art, intention, and self-expression.
