Scarborough-based creatives reflect on making art in the context of the many changes facing the suburb
About this Event

Join us for a film screening and panel discussion that reflects on the significance of art created in Scarborough and the emotions and inspirations that drive Scarborough’s creative community.

Developed in response to the current DMG exhibition by Educator-in-Residence Myuri Srikugan, and presented in partnership with Scarborough Arts, the program first features a screening of Srikugan’s film Imminent Visions. This 46-minute documentary captures Scarborough at a pivotal moment when development projects, changes to transit systems, and growing popularity are dramatically transforming perceptions of Scarborough and its residents. With an uncertain future for a place once dismissed as "Scarberia," Imminent Visions documents local artists, collectives, and arts organizations as they share their perspectives on the possibilities and challenges that lie ahead.

Following the screening, Srikugan will moderate a panel discussion with Scarborough-based creatives and advocates Faizaan Khan, Tiffany Schofield, Vasuki Shanmuganathan, and Kevin Ramroop to continue the conversation. In alignment with New Light, this program honours Doris McCarthy, an artist who created her work with emotional depth and an adventurous spirit, and who too was committed to creating opportunities for young artists. McCarthy established her beloved lifelong home in Scarborough, and both captured and championed this community throughout her career.

This program is free and open to the public, all are welcome. Registration is encouraged.

The screening will take place in AA303, Arts & Administration Building, U of T Scarborough, before moving to the Doris McCarthy Gallery for the panel discussion. Both spaces are wheelchair accessible. The program is seated. Light refreshments will be served. If you have other accommodation needs, please let us know through the registration form or contact [email protected].

ABOUT THE PANELISTS

Faizaan Khan is a designer, researcher, and cultural planner. Khan's practice prioritizes collaboration, community, wit, and empathy, and their research focuses on cultural heritage, racialized urban peripheries, place-keeping, and anti-displacement.

Tiffany Schofield is a visual artist, curator, and arts administrator. Her practice is guided by an interest in cultural placemaking and community building, with a focus on emerging practices and suburban spaces.

Vasuki Shanmuganathan is the founder of the award-winning Tamil Archive Project (TAP), and a Research Associate at the University of Toronto’s Centre for Ethics with the Race, Ethics, and Power Project.

Kevin Ramroop is an experimental artist rooted in sound, storytelling, and language. His artistic ethos intends on looming the liminal, harmonious pluralism that empowers his community and identity.

Myuri Srikugan is an emerging Tamil-Canadian digital artist, specializing in documentary exploration and emotional healing through digital media.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

This program is presented in conjunction with the DMG exhibition (May 11 - July 7, 2024), curated by Carly Wolowich. Focusing on the life and work of the late, Scarborough-based artist and writer Doris McCarthy (1910–2010), the exhibition unites artwork and archival material to laud emotive and eminently humanistic approach to capturing place, over time. McCarthy’s curiosity and dedication to learning are revealed through glimpses into her studio process, where she experimented with new styles and techniques. Throughout her career of more than 80 years, McCarthy ardently shared her wonder in the world, and was steadfastly committed to rendering it in a new light.

New Light is part of The Doris McCarthy Gallery's 20th anniversary programming, a celebration of the gallery's two decades of exhibitions, programs, and community-building in Scarborough.

The Doris McCarthy Gallery is generously supported by the Toronto Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts.
