July 13 will be all about water in celebration of the 17th annual City of Water Day and July 29 will feature the street art of the neighborhood.
ABOUT THE TOURS:
Immersive Performance Tours Along the Gowanus Canal brings audiences to sites in Gowanus that are significant to the superfund remediation of the canal and the rezoning of the neighborhood, both currently underway. At stops along the way, Artichoke Dance Company performs dance works that are embedded into the locations, reflect their significance, and envision a resilient future. Area community organizers lead the walking tour, providing historical information, personal anecdotes and stories of transformation.
ABOUT ARTICHOKE DANCE COMPANY:
The Brooklyn-based Artichoke Dance Company is one of the nation's leading eco-arts organizations, delighting audiences of all ages with their dynamic site-reflective performance works. Like many of Artichoke Dance Company’s productions, Immersive Performance Tours Along the Gowanus Canal feature costumes created from upcycled plastic materials, demonstrating zero-waste principles while commenting on the proliferation of plastics in contemporary life.
This is Artichoke Dance Company’s sixth production highlighting Gowanus and involving area residents and organizations. Brooklyn Utopias Along the Canal, held in 2022, Just Gowanus, held in 2021, the Gowanus Visions Festival of Art and Action, held in 2019, and Global Water Dances on the Gowanus Canal, held in 2017, also collaborated with local environmentally focused and community based organizations and artists to bring awareness to, and involvement in, Gowanus.
