IMechE Award Event - Coffin Works

Join us at the historic Newman Brothers Coffin Fittings Works, now the award‑winning Coffin Works Museum, as we celebrate receiving a prestigious IMECHE award recognising our unique contribution to engineering heritage, community empowerment, and the preservation of Birmingham’s industrial past.

Housed in the Grade II* listed Newman Brothers’ Manufactory, the Coffin Works is the only surviving purpose‑built Victorian coffin furniture factory in the UK. When the factory closed in 1999, everything was left exactly as it was at the end of an ordinary working day, machinery, stock, paperwork, even a pot of tea on the stove. Today, this rare time capsule has been transformed into a thriving museum, creative hub, and events space, welcoming thousands of visitors and earning 15 major awards since opening in 2014.

The IMechE award acknowledges not only our engineering conservation work, but also the power of community, creativity, and resilience. From restoring Victorian machinery through crowdfunding campaigns to empowering people through hands‑on heritage, the Coffin Works continues to punch above its weight as a small, but mighty community museum.
