Habib University is proud to announce the second lecture for the Imam Ali (A.S.) Faculty Chair, the first endowed faculty chair in wisdom and humanities in the world. Happening on 13th January 2025, the lecture features Dr Teena Purohit, esteemed author, scholar, & Associate Professor of Religion at Boston University.During the lecture, Professor Purohit will shed light on how 19th- and 20th-century Muslim reformers sought to renew Islamic tradition in the context of colonial modernity. Her talk will highlight the two models of religious authority, charismatic and exemplary, and offer reflections on how the charismatic paradigm offers a porous space for Imam Ali’s (A.S.) devotion that captivates a broad spectrum of devotees among Muslims, but also Sikhs and Hindus.
Endowed by Zain and Farzana Jeewanjee, the Imam Ali (A.S) Faculty Chair in Wisdom and Humanities at Habib University can play a pivotal in global academia by reviving the wisdom traditions, which draw from philosophical, ethical, and spiritual knowledge to help better understand the complexities of the world around us.
