Don Stewart: Four Decades Retrospective
Join us for IMAGINE THIS…CHILD PLEASE: Don Stewart–Four Decades Retrospective.
This vibrant exhibition bringing together forty years of Don Stewart’s improvisational and surreal image-making. This exhibition marks the largest presentation of Stewart’s work ever shown in one place, offering a rare opportunity to experience the depth and rhythm of his creative practice.
Stewart’s work blends memory, lived experience, and spontaneous visual composition into layered, rhythmic imagery that invites conversation and interpretation. The artist talk, moderated by Dr. Scott A. Sherer, offers insight into four decades of Stewart’s artistic journey.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in Mansfield, Ohio, Don Stewart earned a BFA from The Ohio State University in 1977. His career reflects a wide-ranging engagement with both creative and working-class experiences, including roles as an art instructor, factory machinist, steel mill laborer, lab technician, U.S. Army servicemember, Ohio Air National Guard member, youth care worker, licensed chemical dependence counselor, clinical trainer, and quality control manager.
Stewart is also an accomplished musician specializing in Afro, Latin, and Indian percussion, as well as guitar. He has performed with the William D. Burton Karmic Boogie Band—opening for artists such as Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Bobby Lyles, and Buckwheat Zydeco—and later with Psuedo Buddha. He currently performs with Open Wave Society. These varied experiences inform a practice shaped by resilience, rhythm, and an acute awareness of human complexity.
ABOUT THE MODERATOR
Professor of Art History at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Director of Exhibitions, and Coordinator of the UTSA Museum Studies Minor. Sherer’s interdisciplinary research and curatorial work focus on modern and contemporary art and visual culture, examining the relationship between lived sensory experience and artistic representation.
