About this Event
About this Walk
In the mid-century, Hamilton’s planning minds pictured a future in the sky! A concept of the Elevated City was born, based on the then-modern idea that vehicles and pedestrians should keep to their own realms. The streets below for cars, and a new system of walkways, rooftops, and bridges above for pedestrians. The elevated city was never fully realized, but we live among its vestiges today. Come explore the extents of this concept, stretching from City Hall to City Centre across the rooftops of Jackson Square, and the history that inspired and ultimately doomed this high-flying proposal. We'll dig into the architecture of the buildings on the route, and the mid-century Mayors who shaped the downtown core.
This walk includes going up and down sets of outdoor stairs, with no alternate elevator access.
