About this Event
ILWU Strong: Longshore at the Port of Tacoma
Zack Pattin and Brian Skiffington, ILWU Local 23
From its earliest days, the "Tacoma Advantage" that drew trade to the Tacoma waterfront was rooted in the skill and efficiency of its longshore workers. In March 1886, these workers were the first in Washington state to form a local union. In 1957, they chartered with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), officially becoming ILWU Local 23. Their work is physically demanding and dangerous, but their dedication is what makes the supply chain run. Come hear Local 23 members Zack Pattin and Brian Skiffington speak about the culture and contributions of Longshore workers yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
