This presentation takes a deep dive into historic photos dating back to the 1860s to review the construction of the eight locks built on the St. Marys River linking Lake Superior with the lower Great Lakes. In addition to sharing construction details, Chief Park Ranger, Michelle Briggs, puts them into the context of world and US events. This presentation also includes an update on the 9th navigation lock currently being built.
Michelle Briggs has worked as the Chief Park Ranger at the Soo Locks since 2009. Prior to this position she completed a master’s degree focused on Museum Studies and Great Lakes Maritime History and worked in museums around the Midwest. A native Michigander and 'boatnerd,' she leads interpretation efforts and researches and designs exhibits for the Soo Locks Visitor Center.
