About this Event
Ikebana - the Japanese art of flower arranging - will help you focus on the natural beauty of your surroundings. This hands-on workshop will teach you the basic techniques of ikebana in an easy to understand way. Give yourself a break and treat yourself by creating your own unique, spring-themed arrangement. All supplies will be provided, no equipment or previous experience necessary.
Three different schools of ikebana will be featured in this workshop series. Select the school's fundamentals that speak most to you, or try your hand at all three to get a sampling of a variety of disciplines.
IKENOBO SCHOOL - [Saturday May 25 11am-noon] - Ikenobo is the origin of Ikebana with a history of more than 550 years. Nature shows a vast, harmonized world of beauty. Arranging flowers and finding beauty in flowers with reverence-these are linked to a heart that values nature and cares for other people. This is the spirit of Ikenobo Ikebana.
SANGETSU SCHOOL - [Saturday May 25 1-2pm] - The Sangetsu School of ikebana was established in 1972 in Atami, Japan. This style of ikebana encompasses the beauty of nature and allows you to momentarily pause the stresses of day to day life in order to stop and appreciate the simplicity of your surroundings. Two parts nature, one part technique is the motto of the Sangetsu school.
SOGETSU SCHOOL - [Sunday May 26 11am-noon] - The Sogetsu School of ikebana is one of the largest and most modern with its approach to technique, design, materials and outlook. Sogetsu practitioners are encouraged to use their individuality in their arrangements, by looking at their materials with fresh eyes. The connection of humans with nature brings a new life to materials that does not exist in the natural state, and this is the essence of Sogetsu ikebana.
Minimum recommended workshop age is 16 years, but younger participants are welcome with adult supervision. Please note that this activity is not suitable for young children.
